What differentiates Epicor Prophet 21 from other similar products?
I haven't had much experience in recent years with similar products, but key features that stood out during product selection were the ability to customize screens and the open nature of the database. The product database is extraordinarily well organized and supports a number of connection types making it easy to extract an analyze business data in a number of different ways.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
The open database. I've been able to create literally hundreds of customized, user-specific reports and tools to make the system even more usable.
What do you dislike most about this product?
It's not so much the product as it is the company. Pre-private equity acquisition, Epicor (Activant at the time) was such a good company. It was possible to interface with people who cared and drove the direction of the software products they offered. That is a thing of the past. Your best best is interaction with tier 1 support people who change frequently so it's practically impossible to establish good relations with people you can trust.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
The software is really good, but it is very expensive relative to its capabilities. Do your homework. If you're a durable goods distributor without a lot of project-based orders, it's likely a great fit. But, read all the fine print.
