What differentiates Dell NetWorker Data Protection from other similar products?

NetWorker replaced CommVault not because of any problems with CommVault but rather because of a knee-jerk reaction by management in our company to an outrageous cost estimate from a CommVault sales person. After that, an EMC sales team arrived to "make a sweet deal" with IT management. NetWorker failed miserably to safeguard the data assets of our company. Deduplication is excellent when used in conjunction with the Data Domain appliance, either via DDBOOST or a VTL. We've got 2.3 PB of storage.

What is your favorite aspect of this product?

is open to change. If you get the hang of it, you can customize just about any data domain, which I believe is what does all the magic here, but it's a very compressed/deduped/small backup size relative to the total amount of data, which is fantastic. In essence, it is very storage-efficient, at least when used in conjunction with a data domain.

What do you dislike most about this product?

The user interface is a disgrace. It's a disorganized mess with huge windows that aren't sized correctly, muddled terminology, and the need for numerous clicks to accomplish basic tasks. In order to fully understand how common DR software errors are, and how often you'll need to contact support to fix them, I can't put this in front of my less-experienced techs. To fix many errors, you'll need to know a lot about the CLI tools, which I'm learning to use but which the public documentation does not provide.

What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?

If you have a job title like "backup administrator," Networker may be the best tool for the job because of its ability to back up large amounts of data. Networker, in my opinion, requires a significant amount of time spent with the CLI tools before you can confidently solve many problems on your own.. I would not recommend NetWorker to anyone for any reason because of the frequency with which I have to contact customer support. With only a few exceptions, EMC's support organization is the worst in the industry when it comes to dealing with such a large and complicated system. For the past three years, we've had nothing but serious....

It required data domain integration for deduplication. Networker and DataDomain provide probably the most efficient deduplication mechanism albeit Networker alone does not have any deduplication capabilities
